Copeland Distillery

Located in Northern Ireland’s best-kept-secret historic town of Donaghadee, County Down, the distillery has been under construction for around a year and is now open for tours. Originally founded in 2016, Copeland Gin began with online crowdfunding and has rapidly grown into a beautiful brand and distillery.

The new Copeland gin HQ is located opposite The Copeland Islands, which were once a main smuggling ground between Ireland and Scotland. The ‘Copland Isles’ as they were once known, were the main shipping dock for the North of Ireland before Belfast’s boom.

After a year of planning, construction, building and refurbishment, The Copeland Distillery is now officially operating and open for tours in the breathtaking historical setting of Donaghadee.

The new location in Donaghadee had previously been many things, including an old cinema in the 1900s and more recently a community center. It was run down and needed a lot of work, but the character of the place shone through and it was a perfect blank slate to design and build the new distillery. The architects and builders got to work, and once they had plans set, we were designated our areas and jobs and got to planning.

The team at shopfitout.com consisted of project managers, designers, joiners, painters and a full workshop squad to fit out the distillery. The first port of call, and not to be overlooked, was to design, make and fit the bespoke Copeland branded doors.

They’re not just any old doors. They’re a helaform (sliding) system, with a rare metal frame, advanced MDF to withstand any weather, branded with the beautiful Copeland logo, and a 50-year guarantee. *drops mic*.

The space being completely open and empty allowed for maximum creativity when planning this reception and bar are.

The bar structure itself was tackled first. An I-beam concrete laminate base with a solid 50mm grey aged oak top and copper accents provided a solid, durable and innovative foundation for the rest of the space.

Installed behind the bar are custom-made metal shelving units with integrated LED lighting. The best Irish gin deserves the best Irish shelving!

We finished off the brewery reception area with hardwood tables and chairs, copper layers and high-quality accessories to give it an authentic, rustic feel.

The reimagined space had taken shape. So what next?

The project is still ongoing, and we are currently repurposing an old horsebox for the Copeland team to take on the road, Point of Sale display units for local bars to sell Copeland Gin, and a cask wall for the distillery.
